Tudors History School Workshop

We will set the scene by rolling out our lengthy living timeline creating a brilliant hands-on opportunity to establish a better chronological understanding of what was going on during the different reigns of the Tudor monarchs.

The Tudors managed an awful lot in rather a short period of History. They left a fascinating legacy which we will explore with our terrific Tudor workshop. To begin with we will compare some of the more famous fighters from the period.

A formidable noble in plate armour is incredibly well protected but hideously cumbersome when contrasted with an archer from the same army. Our Tudor workshop is one of earliest periods in History to have a closer look at the introduction of gunpowder on the battlefield.

We can do this by dressing someone up as a musketeer, complete with firearm and shot and then look at the elaborate outfit worn by their commanding officer.

Hands on History can work with just one class all day, or up to four classes in a year group. Each class will be kept busy and entertained all day by us! Please see below examples of 4 itineraries (for 1, 2, 3 or 4 classes).

Interactive learning for KS1, KS2 and KS3

Tudor England was a fascinatingly dirty, dangerous and creative period of British History. From gong farmers to being the groom of the stool in the royal court, what Tudors were doing for a living is fascinating. Our unique ‘What’s my job?’ activity helps to develop skills of enquiry and is a fun, hands-on approach for children to explore and investigate the daily lives of people from the past from carpenters to locksmiths and everything in between.

Besides all the different jobs to do there were an awful lot of battles to fight. A close-up handling session of Tudor arms and armour is a great way for children and teachers to see the change and continuity of military technology.

This activity works in tandem with our remarkable helmet timeline where we have headgear from across the ages, but they need to be arranged in chronological order and perhaps most importantly they need to be tried on for a fabulous class photo!

Unique Educational Resources

Tudor England had limited opportunities for finding information. Knowledge was power and that meant knowing how to use what nature provided and appreciating the natural environment.

A Tudor skins and skulls quiz showcases the different animals living alongside humans in abundance 500 years ago and provides a great opportunity to think and discuss the differences between then and now.

A visit to the apothecary surgeon is a marvellous finale to our Tudor workshop and a truly memorable experience, especially for our volunteer teachers who have one of their lower legs amputated as part of our demonstration.

“The children learnt so much and were buzzing all day. The writing the children produced the following day was of a very high standard. We also had feedback from parents saying how excited their children were and how much they talked about it at home.”
