Romans History School Workshop

Roman history is interesting. Hands on History make it epic. On a Romans visit we will borrow your bravest teacher and go through some basic training and transform them into a fully equipped legionary with armour, weapons and marching pack. For a brilliant comparison we also have a crafty Celt ready to appear with their own unique outfit and weapons. An outstanding Roman day needs a gladiator, so we have a truly magnificent gladiator outfit and all the trimmings to bring this fantastic fighter to life.

Hands on History can work with just one class all day, or up to four classes in a year group. Each class will be kept busy and entertained all day by us! If you book a history school workshop with us, two members of the Hands on History team will come to facilitate.

Interactive learning for KS1, KS2 and KS3

Once you have met our ancestors it is time for the children to enjoy testing their Roman skills in our popular shield wall activity, pitting themselves in Roman formation in nearly-mortal combat against their eternal nemesis – their teachers. Alongside this experience there will be activities where they will explore, investigate and enjoy more artefacts from all aspects of Roman life, more than you could shake a xylospongium at- we will have one with us so you can try. There is also a fantastic child-sized version of the legionary armour to try on.

Unique Educational Resources

We have enough Educational Resources to fill an amphitheatre and they come in all shapes and sizes. We also have enough to keep everyone busy from the start of the day to the very end for up to four different classes. Alongside classroom-based archaeology and investigative activities as well as quizzes and weapons-handling, we have some remarkable Roman demonstrations.

You can visit our Roman doctor to be diagnosed and cured of ancient ills or visit the surgeon for an amputation if needed. We can also shoot our Roman bow for height to illustrate the power of ancient technology and even how they created fire for cooking, metalworking and staying warm.
