The Stuarts and The English Civil War
When James I became King, England and Scotland were united under one monarch, but stayed separate countries. When Charles I became King tensions between him and Parliament grew so great that civil war was inevitable. After much bloody conflict Oliver Cromwell and the New Model Army were triumphant. It was only on Cromwell's death that the monarchy was restored under Charles II. The Hands on History Stuart demonstrations concentrate on the battles of the English Civil War. Using volunteers from our audience we recreate an officer of King Charles' Cavaliers and a Roundhead musketeer and pikeman. A live ‘firing' of our cannon and mortar ends each demonstration. Then all ages can try our Civil War uniforms, armour and equipment, in a controlled and safe manner. With helmets, breastplates and clothing for all sizes and our period weapons including swords and muskets, this is a very popular activity. Our trained staff will be on hand to help and answer any questions. A visit to our camp will reveal how the ordinary people still managed to carry on living surrounded by the violence of the Civil War. A chance for everyone to learn how our ancestors worked the land, foraged from nature and used simple hand tools to work wood, leather and metal to make everything they needed for their everyday lives.
