The Iron Age and Roman Britain
In AD 43, at the time of the Roman Invasion, Britain was a land of many diverse and independent tribes with rich resources and skilled craftsmen. The Roman occupation, over hundreds of years, made our island one of the wealthiest provinces in the Empire. However tribal violence was always simmering close to the surface and more Legions were posted to Britain than any other province. With Hands on History all ages can enjoy our interactive demonstrations. Volunteers from our audience will be dressed as Roman Soldiers or Celtic Warriors and everyone can learn about life in the Legions and the warlike tribes of Britain. Then our Ballista and Onager can hurl their missiles through the air to demonstrate the power of the Roman siege artillery. Then, in a controlled and safe manner, everyone can get their hands on our Roman and Celtic helmets and armour, shields and weapons, with sizes to fit all ages. Our trained and experienced staff will be available to answer everybody's questions and help them dress for battle. At our camp everyone can learn how our ancestors lit fires, foraged from the wild, worked the land and how they hunted for game with bows, spears and slingshot . Our metal, leather and wood working displays show the skill of the Celtic craftsmen. A visit to our Uncta Popina, a travelling traders shop and bar that followed the Legion, will reveal what the off duty Legionary could buy with his hard earned money along with the food, drink and entertainment he could hope to enjoy.
